QUOTES FROM FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES
|
Evan Wilson has been a favorite musician of mine for years, both as principal violist, and as a
chamber music partner. As a combination of strength and sensitivity, he is hard to beat. Add to
this a real feeling for the insides of music, and you have an unusual treasure, wherever he may
end up.
-- Sir Simon Rattle

In my 45 years of conducting the greatest orchestras and musicians around the world, I have
rarely come across the combination of discipline, dedication, complete mastery of an
instrument, leadership and, above all, soul that Evan possesses. His warm personality is
ideally suited to inspiring young people...
-- Maestro Zubin Mehta

I have worked with Mr. Wilson over a period of more than 15 years. He is a superb virtuoso on
his instrument; more important, he is a deeply committed and searching musician. His
collegiality, imagination, and innate ability make him an ideal colleague.
-- pianist Emanuel Ax

When I think of all the great orchestras I've conducted, and I've really conducted all of them, if I would have to choose three principal viola players, he most definitely would be one of them...
maybe there's one other principal viola player where I have such a high level of understanding.
You don't find very often this combination of being a wonderful instrumentalist, being highly
musical, but having also that overlook of what the others do - and that is pretty unique.
-- Maestro Franz Welser-Möst
| |
His playing is frankly... masterful. An inspirational combination of insightfulness, vibrancy,
intelligence, and superior technique.
I have performed numerous times with Mr. Wilson and recently I had the great pleasure of
watching him teach. It was a wonderful experience for me because it is not often that one
witnesses a musician with so much knowledge and information who can successfully convey
this to a student. Watching a student instantly react and learn... not only to technical
challenges, but also the meaning of the music is rare and satisfying.
Mr. Wilson is a musician of the highest caliber and an inspirational teacher.
-- violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg
| |
He's absolutely sure, he leads in the section, and when you are at the head of the section, not
only do you have to play well, of course that's a necessity because everybody looks for you as
the model, but he is able to lead a section to give indication. He has natural authority, and that
is something you have it or you don't, and he has it.
-- Maestro Pierre Boulez

Evan Wilson has been known to me for many years... He is a superb musician and an
outstanding violist. Some years ago, I had the pleasure of working with him and young
musicians during my tensure as Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute,
and I noted then his enthusiasm and ability to reach out to students at a crucial point of their
development. Performing with him in the Schubert Quintent and Strauss' Don Quixote has been
particularly rewarding.
-- cellist Lynn Harrell

I can safely say Evan is one of the most committed, professional, and serious-minded
musicians I have met anywhere in the world.
He is a master of his instrument, and is interested in all styles of classical music. In his
concentration and intense love of his work, he is one of the key players in the L.A.
Philharmonic. As a teacher and a coach his influence would be inestimable. This is truly a
musician in a thousand.
-- Sir Roger Norrington
